3 Things You Probably Didn’t Know about Heat-Resistant Leather Gloves

by Tony Geng on November 17, 2015

Handle a lot of heat? Depending on the industry you work in and the threats you’re exposed to within your workplace, you might want to consider a pair of heat-resistant leather gloves. However, before you make such an important decision, make sure you’re informed.

Here are the crucial things you should know about heat-resistant leather work gloves:

1. The Tanning Process Matters:

When it comes to heatresistance, the way the leather is tanned has a huge factor on the amount of protection the leather will offer. There are two main methods of leather tanning that produce very different results: vegetable-tanned leather, and chromium-tanned leather.

LEATHER-TANNING
Back when tanning leather was a relatively new concept, using vegetable matter in the tanning process was very common. However, there’s a reason why approximately 90% of leather is tanned with chromium oxide nowadays. On its own, leather is typically able to withstand up to 400°F before starting to burn. Chromium oxide is the key to creating a more heat-resistant piece of leather (that’s right, impress your friends with that little nugget of knowledge); once the leather’s been tanned with chromium oxide, it can withstand up to 500°F before it’ll begin to char and harden.

Chromium oxide – that’s your golden ticket to quality heat-resistant leather gloves.

2. Leather has Fantastic Abrasion Resistance:

Looking for gloves with an outstanding level of protection against abrasion? Leather is hands down the best choice. Leather is known for this naturally-occurring benefit, and that’s why we highly recommend selecting leather work gloves for workplaces where abrasion is a daily threat.

3. Heat-Resistant Leather Work Gloves are Well-Suited for Certain Applications:

Isn’t two always better than one? Why would you choose a glove with only one of these benefits when you can have both? Because of the level of heat resistance and protection against abrasion that heat-resistant leather gloves provide, you won’t have to worry about your hands being protected from one type of threat while being exposed to another. This is why leather heat-resistant gloves are the perfect choice for those in need of reliable welding or foundry gloves. And, as an added bonus, heat-resistant leather gloves also provide spark resistance – which is very important if you’re a welder!

Good and informative. The only concern is about chromium which is a hazardous heavy metal.

Chromium is ALSO the ‘golden ticket’ to severe contact dermatitis, if you are one of the people like myself with a severe allergy to it! You will be unable to ever comfortably work wearing chrome-tanned leather gloves. Finding companies that manufacture vegetable tanned welding gloves is like looking for a needle in a haystack! Unfortunately, the big names—Miller, Hobart, Lincoln—–don’t care enough about the small percentage of welders with those allergies, so they only sell the ones tanned with toxic chemicals. There IS a company in Germany that makes nice vegetable-tanned leather welding gloves, but just try getting them over here! :S
