Our Top 3 Takeaways from ASSE’s Safety 2016

by Julie on June 30, 2016

Comments (1)

This week, along with thousands of other Occupational Health and Safety professionals, we travelled to in Atlanta, GA — the birthplace of Coca Cola, Home Depot, and the civil rights movement — to attend one of the most highly anticipated events on the Safety social calendar: ASSE’s Safety 2016.

ASSE's Safety 2016 Conference

While every show is memorable, it’s safe to say (see what we did there?) that the energy at Safety 2016 blew us away. It was — without a doubt — a show to remember.

Here are our top three “A-ha!” moments from this year’s show:

1. Old – Strange + Click = Good.

Didn’t quite catch that? We’ll explain.

It’s an understatement to say that Frans Johannson‘s keynote speech at the start of the show was powerful. He spoke at length about the importance of having — and embracing — new thought processes and ideas. As Johannson explained, otherwise, “we’re going to end up in the same place as everyone else is… Because it’s the logical place to be.”

Translation? The old way isn’t necessarily the best way. So, while it’s easier said that done, of course, it might be time to try a new approach.

Instead of relying on tired and outdated habits and routines that no longer suffice, Johannson explained that there’s a lot of value in looking for what he called “Click Moments” instead.

For those who haven’t heard the term before, Johannson explained that “Click Moments” are “ways to combine concepts in unexpected and serendipitous ways.” To do this, he suggested instead, trying to look for inspiration in unexpected (and sometimes even unlikely) places — especially ones that are outside of the Health and Safety bubble. How would some of our favourite companies — including Netflix — approach the problem? he asked. What would the leaders of companies you most admire suggest that you try?

(Brilliant, right? We thought so too.)

2. 15 minutes. That’s all it takes.

Before Safety 2016, we thought that 15 minutes was just enough time for a short coffee break. However, after attending a few of the new “Flash Sessions” at this year’s show, we learned that 15 minutes is actually all the time you need to get inspired.

Surprised? Well, as it turns out, 15 minutes is the perfect amount of time to ask questions, learn some new tips and tricks by engaging with some of the most talented minds in our industry. It’s also the perfect amount of time to find out if it would be beneficial for you to explore that topic more deeply in one way or another — either by attending a longer session, or by visiting the thought leader’s booth so that you can continue the conversation with them later.

Kudos to you, ASSE: the Flash Sessions were a big hit! We hope we’ll get the chance to sit in on a few more Flash Sessions in years to come.

3. Go, Go, Gadget Goo!

At Safety 2016, we learned that you love goo. Like, really love goo. (And we do, too!)

Feeling confused? If you visited us at Booth #2543, you know exactly what we’re talking about: D3O®‘s incredible (and infamous) orange goo. It’s stretchy, it’s super fun to play with, and — the icing on the cake — it provides unparalleled protection against impacts. Incredible, right? We think so too.

Those of you who came to our booth got to experience this magnificent substance firsthand, and we could tell that you were as impressed as we are when we first discovered it.

Stay tuned for the results of our exciting business partnership with D3O® with you in the coming months. While we wish we could spill the beans right now, we promise: it’s worth the wait.

(Missed the goo? Prepare to be impressed. Very impressed.)

Well, that’s a wrap. We hope you had as much fun at Safety 2016 as we did. We can’t wait to put all of the insightful things we learned into action.

The countdown till next year’s show in Denver is officially on!
