Gloves are for Sissies (and Other Non-Truths)

We’ve covered the importance of hand protection on the site a couple of times before — it’s kind of our thing. Believe it or not, there is still a mentality on job sites that practicing safe work habits is uncool. While a pair of work gloves will probably never make you look like James Dean, they will help protect you from workplace hazards, meaning you leave a job site the same way you stepped on to it. Today, we are addressing non-truths and common complaints about gloves.

Gloves are for Sissies:

I blame the Village People for this, since they are the original macho men. If even one of them wore the proper hand protection when depicting workers in traditionally male-dominated industries including construction, ranching, military and law enforcement, I wouldn’t be writing this article today.

Hand protection. Macho men.

Gloves aren’t exclusively for “sissies,” they are for anyone who wants to protect one of their most used extremities — their hands — plain and simple.

If you don’t believe me, maybe you’ll believe NASA. Michelle M., an Environmental Engineer for the space agency stated “these gloves made the tasks easier to accomplish since there was no loss of dexterity in the digits,” referring to our TenActiv™ 18-Gauge Cut-Resistant Glove.

They are Uncomfortable and Don’t Fit Right:

While this is still a common complaint about gloves, it used to be a major concern in many industries. For a long time leather split fitters gloves were the only option. These are gloves that will be fairly thick and only come in one size. However, as technology progressed, textiles have become a viable alternative for glove manufacturers. This means that gloves will have a snugger fit and less bulk — our sizing guide can help determine the exact size glove you should be wearing.

Many users won’t realize it at first but when they’re talking about discomfort in their gloves, it could be the palm coating. As a rule of thumb, polyurethane palm coating allows the most freedom of movement for hands and will provide a touch sensitivity that might not be found in thicker palm coatings like nitrile or latex.

Calluses are Nature’s Hand Protection:

There are only two situations were this is true:

  1. Protecting yourself from ever feeling the touch of another human again.
  2. Protecting your bank account from having to purchase sand paper because your palms can do that job now.

Calluses seem to be a point of pride for people, they represent hard work and not letting pain get in the way of completing a task. The problem with this logic is that wearing proper hand protection isn’t deterring workers from working hard rather it means there is less recovery time required between shifts.

“And this, kids, is why you should wear gloves.”

My Employees Don’t Need Gloves Because They’re Smart:

Intelligence has nothing to do with it, accidents can happen. You wouldn’t start driving erratically just because you’re wearing a seat belt just like you wouldn’t start taking risks on a job site because you’re wearing hand protection. Performing a task in a safe manner is the first course of action, but it never hurts to have additional measures in place.

Chances are, if you’re reading this article, you already know the importance of wearing PPE, including hand protection. Take the next step and download our FREE infographic on the “6 Tips for Getting to Zero Hand Injuries” by clicking the button below.
