Understanding the standard:
The standard sets out guidelines for the selection and use of hi-viz safety apparel like shirts, rainwear, outerwear and now GLOVES! The standard combines two previously separate standards (ANSI/ISEA 107 and ANSI/ISEA 207) for administrative simplicity. There are now three types of hi-viz garments:
How it applies to gloves:
Gloves are a new addition to the ANSI/ISEA 107-2015; to meet the standard a high-viz glove must have 5 square inches of background material and 5 square inches of retroflective material as seen below.
Difference between background material and retroreflective:
Background material is considered the colored fluorescent material which is designed to be noticeable. Retroreflective is designed to reflect a high amount of light. When put together they create the hi-viz material recognized in the ANSI/ISEA 107-2015 standard.
Contrast your environment:
The standard mentions three options for background material colors:
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) suggests contrasting your environment. The example Katie provided was in the oil and gas field where barrels will be bright orange and to stay noticeable in that environment a worker should wear yellow hi-viz clothing.
When to use hi-viz gloves:
Although the standard only outlines three types of jobs where hi-viz PPE should be worn; any job where there is low light, poor weather conditions, nighttime work or simply the desire for added awareness can benefit from this standard.
Cost to Industry:
According to Derek, there may be a slight premium on hi-viz material, however based on OSHA statistics, 70% of hand injuries occurred when workers were not wearing gloves. The average cost of lost time due to injury is $7,500 so in comparison, a slightly more costly glove may save more money in the long run.
