6 Easy Ways to Reduce Your Hand Protection Costs

by Julie on October 10, 2014

We all know that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a vital component of workplace safety. But many employers are concerned with the cost of introducing new safety measures.

The safety of your employees should be the most obvious reason to spend more on PPE. But there are many reasons to update your safety program. This blog will look at some of those reasons and identify how you can actually save money by making sure you have the proper hand protection in place.

1. The High Cost of Low Protection:

The initial cost of purchasing personal protective equipment can be startling. But the cost of not using PPE is much higher. The following costs need to be considered for every injury that a worker sustains:

  • Insurance claims
  • Medical bills
  • Lost time
  • Workers’ compensation payouts

Suddenly, proper PPE doesn’t look so expensive. The average lost time hand injury costs $7,500 per incident. The price different between a general purpose work glove made from cotton or leather versus a cut-resistant glove made with Kevlar® or TenActiv™ can be as little as $3 a pair.

Preventing even a single hand injury pays for 2,500 pairs of cut-resistant work gloves. The math is simple. If you’re finding resistance from your purchasing department, these simple numbers can change perspectives.

2. Choosing the Right Protection:

Choosing the right hand protection for your business is vital. So this doesn’t just mean going with the most expensive gloves. Instead, analyze the work you do and equipment you use, and pick PPE that suits that specific type of work and equipment.

Look at the hazards your workers face on a daily basis when selecting PPE. Take the time to have the proper research done so you can pick the perfect gloves for your company. Spending a few extra hours to choose the proper PPE will reduce hand injuries and prices over time.

3. Durability Matters:

Even with discount pricing, single or short term-use gloves aren’t always a good option for long-term savings. Look for gloves made from engineered yarns for high durability or that have high abrasion ratings.

4. PPE Vending Program:

PPE vending machines are becoming very popular in the manufacturing industry. These machines use software to track how many pieces of PPE are used. It can let you know when inventory is low and automatically reorder inventory.

These machines reduce inventory costs and reduce theft/abuse by tracking inventory and providing PPE only when needed. A well-executed PPE vending program can save you up to 40% by increasing efficiency, productivity, and inventory.

Watch this video to learn more about PPE vending machines.

5. SKU Reduction:

Managing the ratio of cost to wear in your company can save a lot of money in PPE expenses. Focus on the individual costs of your gloves and remove redundant or duplicate products. You can also focus on standardizing your PPE usage. This will reduce supply chain costs as well as ensuring the correct PPE is used for the job.

6. Consider Laundering Gloves

Good quality PPE should be able to be washed and reused and gloves are no exception. A glove laundering program is more cost effective than replacing equipment after each use.

When considering gloves, or any PPE, for your business, the right choices can result in high cost-savings across the board. Using the right PPE is almost always the route to long-term cost savings.

Putting new styles of gloves or other PPE into a vending machine program requires both great communication and additional training to advise supervisors and employees: what’s new; why it’s new; what application hazard it’s better for; and what limitations that PPE has in the work place. Vending is only a tool of delivery….it doesn’t solve poor communication in the work place. Communication and training by the safety department and supervision remain essential.
