Do You Know How Dangerous Sleep Deprivation Can Be?

by Paige on May 19, 2017

Being sleep deprived can be a dangerous thing. Staying awake for 17 hours is equal to having a blood alcohol content of 0.08. If you’re awake for more than 23 hours, that means you are way over the limit. According to the National Sleep Foundation, on average two-thirds of people admit to driving when they’re drowsy. Making your commute even more unsafe than it already is.

What is Sleep Deprivation?

Sleep deprivation is a sufficient lack of restorative sleep over an extended period. Sleep deprivation causes physical or psychiatric symptoms and affects regular performances of tasks. If the body does not get the required amount of rest it needs, it causes serious health problems. With so much going on during our daily life we tend to sacrifice what we need most, sleep.

How Does it Affect Me?

Sleep deprivation can impact the human body in many ways. The most common implication of sleep deprivation is sleepiness. General fatigue is pretty standard. If you have zero motivation to complete a task or a constant need for a nap, it is very likely that you are tired. Possible mental implications include reduced reaction time – which increases the likelihood of making critical mistakes. Meaning that you are more at risk to make critical mistakes when conducting a job. It can also make you extremely irritable, antsy, and moody.

Not only does sleep deprivation impact your mental capacity, but it also has some pretty serious effects on the body as well. If your Central Nervous System does not get the time to rest and recuperate from the long day’s work, it makes you more susceptible to microsleep and a whole host of other immune problems.

A microsleep is when you take a little nap but have no idea that you took a nap, they can be extremely dangerous, and you could fall asleep at the wheel and not even know it. Microsleeps could cause harm to you and to others around you. Lack of sleep can severely impact all your major systems that work together in your body. Your body is a well-oiled machine; and it needs the rest to get it through the day so it can run like one.

It could also be costing you money. Fatigue related productivity losses can cost up to $2,000 per worker each year. If you have a lot of people on your team that will add up quite quickly.

Studies show that a 10-15 minute nap increases productivity and morale among workers. As it turns out nap-time can also reduce the number of substances being used like coffee, energy drinks and cigarettes to keep you awake. Encourage a better sleep  schedule for your workers and yourself. Keeping everyone safe should be your top priority. You as an employer should care about your employee’s well-being. By promoting a good night’s sleep among your crew, and making your schedules consistent.

Encourage your team to get 6-8 hours of sleep a night. A good night’s rest can make a world of difference the next day.
