Happy 169th Birthday, Thomas Edison!

It’s hard to believe that Thomas Edison, the most prolific inventor in history, was born 169 years ago today.

Many of you might be wondering why we celebrate this special day each year at Superior Glove. Well, most people know that Edison invented the incandescent light bulb. But did you know that he also had a hand in inventing the first phonograph, some types of cement and batteries, and even motion picture?

That means that every time you FaceTime a family member on your iPhone, jam out to a song that’s blasting through YouTube, or watch an episode of Making of a Murderer on Netflix, you have Edison to thank. (Not to mention the fact that he also prevented us from having to stumble around in the dark! I think that’s definitely worth a mention.) These are just a few of the many examples of how Edison’s inventions have changed the lives of people all around the world for the better.

It’s pretty incredible when you stop and think about it, isn’t it?

But Edison isn’t only impressive because he holds more patents than any other inventor in the world. Along with all of his incredible inventions, it’s also the way that he collaborated with others and inspired them to bring about change that truly impresses us.

We celebrate Edison’s creative mind and his passion for innovation, because it’s the same spirit that fuels the creation of our many different styles of work gloves. But we also make a point of remembering Edison’s birthday each year because of his determination: his motivation to keep throwing spaghetti at a wall until he found a way to make it stick, so to speak, as well as his ability to recognize when he needed help in order to make his ideas become a reality. Edison was known for his ability to bring together groups of engineers, machinists, and scientists in order to create something that (little did he know) would benefit the lives of other people for years to come. Think about the way that the incandescent light bulb he is so famous for inventing works. All of the parts have a certain role they have to play: the cord needs to be plugged in, the electricity has to travel through the cord, the current has to be able to move all the way into the filament in the centre of the bulb, and even then, the filament needs to be able to generate enough heat in order to be able to glow. If any of these things go wrong, then you remain standing there, disappointed, and surrounded by darkness.

But, if all of the parts do work together and do the jobs that they’re supposed to, in a sudden flash, light bursts in through the darkness, illuminating everything that it touches.

We recognize that this is exactly what we strive to do at our company. That same kind of dedicated, cooperative process is required to create each and every single pair of the thousands of different work gloves that we manufacture here at Superior Glove. From the time that the idea is first conceptualized on the drawing board, to the moment when it finally arrives at the workplace of the employee whose hands will be protected because of it, it takes many different pairs of hands to put those ideas into motion and become real live work gloves.

And, because of all of this, we’re thankful. We’re thankful for all of the dedication that it takes from all of our employees, distributors, and strategic partners to make these ideas become reality. And, of course, we’re thankful for Edison for being such a phenomenal role model.

Thank-you, Edison, for showing us that when you have the right team of people working together, anything is possible.

So, let’s all raise a glass (or a piece of cake!) to one of the most ground-breaking thinkers of all time: happy 169th, Thomas Edison!
