Top 5 Things To Do in Halifax for CSSE 2017 (After Visiting Booth #75)

by Frank MacDonald on September 12, 2017

Comments (0)

The Canadian Society of Safety Engineers (CSSE) 2017 Professional Development Conference is only days away. We’re looking forward to seeing you at booth #75 for our presentation ‘The Top 5 Facts You NEED to Know to Be Safer at Work.’

While the education side of CSSE is crucial, you shouldn’t have to spend your free time watching HBO in your hotel room.

To make sure you get the most out of your time in Halifax, Nova Scotia, we put together a list of the must-do things in the ‘City of Trees.’

1. Alexander Keith’s Brewery:

Alexander Keith is known for one thing:

The founder of one of Canada’s oldest breweries, Alexander Keith was also the mayor of Halifax.

The $26.95 is a trip back in time to 1863. Historical actors guide you through the tour, explaining the development of Alexander Keith’s brewery as well as how his famous Indian Pale Ale is made.

The tour concludes with a tasting of some of his famous suds as well as small batch and limited edition beers.

2. Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk

After a full day of learning and networking at CSSE, you might need some time to unwind.

The Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk is an ideal place to do that.

The 4 kilometer (2.5 mile) boardwalk has something for everyone.

If you’re looking for a quiet place to sit and watch the ships pass by, grab a drink at Murphy’s Cable Wharf.

If you’re interested in a bit more liveliness, the boardwalk also features Casino Nova Scotia and the Lower Deck, a three-story bar favored by locals.

3. The Press Gang Restaurant & Oyster Bar:

As their website explains, a press gang was a group employed by a commanding officer to impress (and pressure) men into serving in the army or navy.

Situated in one of the oldest parts of Halifax, the building that houses the Press Gang dates back to 1759.

The Press Gang also pays tribute to the province’s history of fishing with a wide range of seafood on its locally sourced menu.

Along with maritime oysters, you can also choose between sea bass, lobster and halibut — along with deer, elk and or something called ‘The Drill’ where you let the chef create a five course tasting menu for two.

4. Bowl a Strike, Candlepin Style:

Looking for a fun night out with a couple of beers and a game of bowling?

Famous in the Canadian Maritime provinces and the New England states of America, candlepin bowling takes the difficulty of traditional tenpin bowling up a notch.

  • The balls are smaller, lighter and don’t include finger holes.
  • The pins are thinner and harder to knock down.
  • Downed pins are not cleared away between balls during a player’s turn.

However, to make up for the added difficulty, players are allowed to throw three balls instead of two.

Your goal: Beat the highest record in a sanctioned game of candlepin bowling (245 out of a possible 300 points).

5. Hike Up Citadel Hill

No visit to Halifax is complete without a hike to the top of Citadel Hill. This historic site gives you insight into life for soldiers 200 years ago. Tour the Halifax Citadel Army Museum for Canadian military history, beginning with the First World War. Entrance fees are waved this year thanks to the Canada 150 Celebrations.

Experience Solider-life for a day:

If you’re a die-hard history buff, this is a must. The three-hour Solider for a Day program lets you step into the boots of a 19th century Highlander.

The experience includes being fitted for an authentic uniform including kilt, sporran and Glengarry bonnet. You will also learn how to march, fire a rifle and be trained as an elite member of the British Army.

Go on a Ghost Tour:

If you’re not much of a history fan, don’t worry.

Citadel Hill hosts ghost tours with stories and eerie legends of the area, starting nightly at 8:30pm.
