The Top 5 Takeaways from Partners in Prevention 2017

by Joe Geng on May 5, 2017

This week, we participated in the Partners in Prevention conference that was held in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. And we sure were busy, roughly 1000 people visited our booth over the two days. Partners in Prevention is all about workplace safety, and we thought we would share our top five takeaways from the show.

1. Promoting Happiness in the Workplace:

One of the keynote speakers, Neil Pasricha, talked about how happiness in the workplace can promote better work. The bestselling author of The Book of Awesome and The Happiness Equation: Want Nothing + Do Nothing = Have Everything. He taught us that sometimes we need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. The bad mood that you might be in, could make you more susceptible to workplace accidents. If we are diverting our focus to what we’re going through, we pay less attention to what’s going on around us. Take a break, get some fresh air and come back to it. 2. Mental Health Matters:

May is mental health month, so it is easy to see why this would be a topic of conversation this year at PIP. Stephen Page from the Barenaked Ladies was a keynote speaker, and he talked about the stigma that is attached to mental health. He told the crowd that to him, his mental health issues started with himself, his personal story really made an impact. Significant headway has been made against the mental health stigma , but it’s still there. Since we put an emphasis on safety, why not put that towards the safety of your employees and yourself. Being safe starts with you and your mental health. If you’re not to sure who Stephen Page is, here is a song he later realized was about mental illness.

3. We Get Distracted Too Easily:

We may have lost a little bit of focus, but this year one of the key messages at the conference was about distraction. From the distracted driving course that the Ministry of Transportation created, to having a keynote speaker talk about being distracted in the workplace, and the impact of tech on human behavior. Curt Steinhorst they keynote speaker has made it his life work to help professionals navigate the workplace distractions. His main focus is the communication devices we all so commonly use throughout the day. We get distracted, it’s common. Curt said that on average we pay attention for three minutes at a time, and it takes us 23 minutes to get back to our original task. So while we might lose a bit of focus here and there, it is important to pay attention and focus on the task at hand. Learn about OSHA’s ban on distracted driving here.

4. Safety Talks Don’t Have to be Boring:

We’re all used to those long drawn out power points about workplace hazards and workplace safety, that happen once a month. So why not take a different approach, start having toolbox talks, they’re short, informal, and gets people in the habit of learning and knowing the risks of every job before you start. 5. Superior Glove’s Booth was Busy:

Visitors to our booth learned that 70.9% of workers who suffered hand injuries on the job, weren’t wearing gloves. Being the cool people that we are, we handed out over 900 pairs of our famous Canadian made S15NT’s. These gloves provide abrasion and puncture resistance and are 100% biodegradable, thanks to our special nitrile coating.
