The Best Uses of Gloves in Movies (And How You Can Be Just Like Your Heroes)

Ever wonder where Hollywood’s most memorable movie characters do their clothes shopping?

Hopefully somewhere other than downtown Los Angeles: it is the “Alien Invasion Capital of the World”, after all.

Even Batman probably goes out bargain-hunting every now and again.

Being a walking Halloween costume shouldn’t stop anyone from rocking discounted jean shorts. If you’re going to fight injustice, fight it with style.

But regardless if you’re a fan of jean shorts, khakis or bat-tights, the Toronto International Film Festival kicks off this week and to get in the spirit, we thought it would be a good time to dust off the ol’ projector and talk about some of 21st century’s most well-regarded movies, along with the timeless wardrobes that made them look so good – gloves included.

We’ve divided our choices into four different genre categories

This will help to show how important gloves (and glove-related accessories) have been on the silver screen.

From criminals to cowboys, you can’t get too far without proven hand protection.

And yes, there might be a spoiler or two ahead.

#4: The Superhero Glove

The glove, like great responsibility or a questionable costume choice, has been a part of the superhero’s DNA since the earliest days of spandex and crimefighting.

Just like the rest of us, even “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” are at risk for flame hazards, high-impact mishaps, puncture and cut wounds and even chemical based incidents.

The coolest superpower isn’t wall-crawling, invisibility or super-speed. Its knowing how to keep those hands safe.

Wonder Woman (2017)

We might be cheating a little here because Diana Prince doesn’t really wear gloves (more like super-stylish gauntlets) but when it comes to high-impact protection, you’ll be hard pressed to find something superior (get it?). See below.

Our vibration-dampening gloves might not be bulletproof but when you’re looking to protect your hands from repetitive impact work or the effects of vibration tools, these goatskin-palm, leather-based gloves are the next best thing.

#3: The Science Fiction Glove

Trying to protect yourself in a science fiction movie really is a gamble.

You could be getting thrown backwards in time in a faulty sports car one minute and launched into space, (either as a trained astronaut or an unlucky oil driller) the next.

Or you could be tasked with fighting off aliens, from the conquering to the curious.

Fortunately, we have a glove to cover all your out-of-this-world needs.

Well, almost. It’s tough to make something “Predator-proof” – believe us, we’ve tried.

Interstellar (2014)

With the Earth on the edge of environmental collapse, a team of scientists, a former pilot and their AI companions, are sent off into deep space to find the human species a new home while hoping to locate missing members of a previous expedition.

Of course, going where no one has gone before requires some pretty high-end PPE, able to withstand whatever the unknown universe can throw at it. Here’s a good, if wet, example.

Talk about a bad day at the beach, right?

While we can’t stop your beloved concert t-shirt from getting wet, (be honest, it was time to wash it anyways) we can help keep those hands nice and dry if you’re ever considering a day trip to the water planet.

Our North Sea™ 11″ Winter Nitrile Coated Gloves are splash resistant against oils, solvents and most importantly, water.

Additionally, you can count on abrasion and puncture.

But if you’re heading out on a galactic mission, please remember to pack a dry set of clothes.

#2: The Action Movie Glove

If one job is as dangerous as operating power tools without effective hand and wrist protection, it has to be that of the action movie character.

The hazards are numerous: speeding cars, natural disasters and depending on which galaxy you call home, maybe a lightsaber cut or two.

But cuts to the hand, no matter who’s responsible, can be incredibly painful and if not treated properly, they can become a serious concern.

It helps to keep those digits and palms protected.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

When a warrior’s prized sword is stolen, a race across 19th century China ensues and to catch the culprits, drastic measures must be taken.

Of course, when you’re looking for something sharp enough to put a butcher’s knife to shame, you just might be putting your hands at risk.

Remember, “cut-proof” gloves don’t exist. Instead, there is cut resistance.

Eventually, an accident will take place, even if you do have expert sword-wielder on your resume, that might need some stitches.

Or, at minimum, it’ll be a very close call.

Our goal is to lessen the impact of that potential injury if and when it happens. We have a whole lineup of cut-resistant gloves but if you’re not sure how to begin, check out at our handy explainer video

#1: The Romantic Movie Glove

We might not all be suckers for happy endings but every now and again, you come across that movie that just tugs on your heartstrings like an S13FRNE that stays snug on your hand.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but here at Superior, we have a soft spot for glove-centric movie fare.

Our love for gloves? It’s the relationship that keeps on giving.

Serendipity (2001)

After a chance meeting while glove shopping in New York City, John and Kate feel as though they’ve finally found their glovemate, sorry, soulmate, but after just one day together, they lose contact and Kate moves to California.

Years later, weeks before their respective weddings, they attempt to find each other, wanting to know if they were meant to be together all along. The catch being that each has one half of that fateful pair of gloves.

It might sound easier said than done but when you’re trying to reunite a missing pair, you can do just about anything.

Happy endings, right?

We warned you. But even if you are having a magical moment in the middle of winter, cold weather stops for no one and those gloves aren’t going to do much to keep your hands warm.

That’s where we come in.

Our Clutch Gear® Hi-Viz Winter Mechanics Gloves are lined to for warmth up to -15°C / 5°F, are rated for level 5 cut resistance, come with strong abrasion and durability properties and a design that allows for an increased lifespan that’s able to hold up in tough conditions.

Bonus Category: Your Next Adventure

Regardless if you’ll be in Toronto for TIFF or not, you don’t need to be a movie star to appreciate a good pair of gloves.

Whatever your task or industry: heat resistance, chemical resistance, oil and gas or automotive, there’s a glove that we believe can be a great fit for your workplace.

Don’t let uncertainty stop you. We’re here to help. Unlike celluloid film, good safety practices will never go out of style.
